In April 4th, the official website of Nippon Steel announced that in order to meet the demand for tin-coated sheets for containers from local customers mainly consisting of can factories, it has decided to expand the electroplating production line of its wholly-owned subsidiary (NS-SUSNS) in Thailand, which is engaged in the production of cold-rolled sheets, hot-dip galvanized sheets and tin-coated sheets. The investment amount is approximately 2 billion Thai baht (about 57.48 million US dollars).

Nippon Steel stated that as a major global export base for food cans, Thailand has a highly concentrated related industry, and the demand for tinplate used in containers is expected to continue to grow. This investment aims to further promote the localization process of its industries in Thailand, enhance the resilience of the supply chain system, and meet local market demands by improving the local supply capacity of tinplate. This capacity expansion project is expected to be completed in March 2027. By then, the annual production capacity of tin-coated sheets for NS-SUSNS will be expanded from the current 280,000 tons to 350,000 tons.

Since 1963, Thailand has been a base for Nippon Steel to conduct product processing business and is one of its most important overseas strategic markets. Including the two subsidiaries it acquired in Thailand in 2022, Nippon Steel currently operates 30 local enterprises directly or indirectly in Thailand, employing a total of approximately 8,000 people and building a complete supply chain from steel raw materials to end customers.
